Spring

Planting

Lettuce, spinach, kale, collards and Swiss chard are some of the first crops to be planted in the field in spring.

Black plastic mulch is rolled out using a plastic mulch layer. The plastic mulch layer is a machine that attaches to the back of the tractor. Drip tape is placed under the black plastic as it is rolled out. Holes are punched in the plastic and individual plants are planted in the holes.

Black plastic mulch is used early and late in the season to raise the temperature of the soil promoting root and plant growth.

During the hot growing season we use white plastic mulch to deflect the heat reducing soil temperature.

To provide continual produce throughout the season we plant each variety in succession planting. Most vegetables and fruits are planted in batches every two to three weeks to ensure we extend availability for as long as possible.

We continually plant and replant fields throughout spring and early summer.
